The Morland Picture Interview (MPI) measure comparable to the CDT measure just discussed involves showing the subject the photograph of the six children of their own sex, three of each race, and asking about each racial pair, “Which one do you look more like?” The subject is then asked of all six children in the photograph, “Which one do you look most like?” The answer to this latter question is used for the MPI measure of racial selfsimilarity. The results from a number of different MPI studies of Afro-American subjects are presented in Table 7-3, where it can be seen once again that roughly half of the preschool Afro children selected Afro figures and half selected Euro figures. In these studies somewhat more of the preschool Afro subjects indicated they looked like the Euro than the Afro models in spite of the fact that subjects have a much wider choice of models on the MPI than on the CDT, for on the MPI subjects can choose among Afro models of light, medium, and dark skin. As was the case with the CDT findings, the MPI results with inschool Afro subjects showed that a large majority said they looked like Afro rather than Euro models. This significant shift in self-similarity responses from the preschool to inschool levels parallels the shift from pro-Euro preference to pro-Afro preference which we noted in the previous chapter.
